Magazines Part 2

Image Based;
The image based magazine cover is the most common cover that most designers use. the person or people usually look at the camera and smile. Depending on the subject the person could be frowning or smirking, not all pictures are of happy people. They don't always look at camera but you will commonly see them looking at the camera.

Illustration Based:
In the mid 30s drawing illustrations were the only way to create a magazine cover.  Many of the illustrations on magazines now are made to be funny or out of the ordinary. Now there are many places that get computer generated illustrations. Many magazines have a trend of doing computer generated covers. When magazine companies have illustrated covers they are colorful and eye catching.

Type Based:
This approach is rare not many companies use it. There is always something very unique about the way the numbers and words are placed. Type based covers are very different and striking. More people are using calligraphy on there covers to give it character.

Concept Based:
Concept based magazine covers are used to get across a strong message that is usually powerful and can have any meaning on the way you perceive it. When planning a concept magazine cover you need to be thinking about how to give it character how to give is a message. You need to ask yourself will the readers understand the message you are trying to get across. This type of magazine cover is not commonly used.

The relationship between words and photos on a magazine cover is words can be written in all types of ways. You can arrange your words with colors. You can express a hidden message through photos. This is important because some topics cannot come across from a  picture so you need to have words and numbers while some topics can come through from a picture and explain everything and catch the readers eye. But both pictures and words need
to catch the readers eye.
